Meet Our Pediatricians
Hal Kanthor, MD
“I am always impressed by the unique parenting styles used to successfully raise and nurture children. I enjoy following them over a long period of time and helping families deal with illness and wellness issues of behavior, growth, and development.”
Dr. Kanthor, a practicing pediatrician in Rochester for more than 20 years, has been with Bay Creek Pediatrics since it opened in 1992. He has a special interest and experience in school-related problems, such as learning and attentional issues. He chairs the Committee on Children with Disabilities for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and in 1997 and 2003 received Special Achievement Awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
A graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Kanthor earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. After completing his pediatric residency at Yale University and the University of Rochester, he did additional pediatric fellowship training in Rochester. Dr. Kanthor is board certified in pediatrics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
A life-long resident of Rochester, Dr. Kanthor is married, active in the community, grows several varieties of tomatoes, and enjoys visiting his four children in Philadelphia, China and Bangladesh.
Julia Stein, MD
“For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a pediatrician. I love to watch my patients and their families grow together, to help them make good healthcare choices, to empower them to learn about themselves and take charge of their health.”
Dr. Julia Stein, who knew as a teenager she wanted to be a pediatrician, has been with the Rochester General Medical Group since 1995. She moved to Rochester after completing her residency in pediatrics at Overlook Hospital (Columbia University affiliate) in Summit, New Jersey, and has a special interest in growth and development, mental health, holistic health, environmental health and adolescent female issues.
A graduate of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Medical School of Pediatrics in Russia, Dr. Stein is board certified in pediatrics and Integrative Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Holistic Medical Association. She takes as active role in teaching medical students and pediatric residents as a clinical instructor of Pediatrics with the University of Rochester. Dr. Stein also chairs the Integrative Medicine committee of the Monroe County Medical Society, and volunteers for a number of local organizations involved with students’ health education. She frequently contributes to parenting magazines and lectures in the community on matters related to Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Stein is married, has two children and considers herself a lifelong learner and educator. She enjoys music, movies, reading, traveling and yoga.
Sarah I. Marques, MD, MSPH
“Caring is about listening. I take time to listen to children, to engage them. I make them feel that they are heard. I don’t rush the visit.”
Dr. Sarah Marques has pediatrics in her DNA. The daughter of a renowned pediatrician, she says, "My role model is my Dad. He always has time for both kids and parents, and looks at aspects of children's health beyond the medical." Diet, environment, schooling, family dynamics--Dr. Marques is well-versed in a wide range of children's health issues. As the mother of two children, she combines her firsthand knowledge of parenting with special interests in adolescent medicine, early childhood development, and autism. With her ability to understand kids, listen to parents, and translate it all into the best of care, she is respected by her peers and beloved by her patients.
A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Marques has been with the Rochester General Medical Group since 2005. She graduated from the College of William & Mary summa cum laude and from UNC Chapel Hill Medical School and Public Health School in the maternal and child health programs. She completed her residency training in pediatrics and an additional fellowship year in adolescent medicine at the University of Rochester.
