FAQs About Don't Weight

How did the program get started?

Mary Lou Pulcino noticed a significant number of families concerned with weight gain, starting at the age of 10.  Providing one-on-one counseling is helpful, but they wanted more support.  Mary Lou determined the following important pieces of the puzzle: families learn from each other, kids like groups, schools use small-group process, kids feel comfortable with groups similar to themselves, parents feel guilty and want to talk to other parents about what works and to commiserate.

How long has the program been in existence?

The program started in 1998 as an 8-week program and increased to 12 weeks a few years later.

Does it work?

All participants and parents who attend consistently report increased awareness of eating habits, reading food labels, and attempt to increase activity levels.  Some students reduce their body mass index (BMI) or stabilize weight gain through the course of the program.  However, weight loss is not focused on or expected in the short length of the program.

Is it safe for everyone?

Yes. We focus on healthy lifestyle changes that are appropriate for everyone.

Is this a diet?

No. Participants are encouraged to make changes to their eating and activity level to cause weight loss or slowed weight gain over time through general guidelines to reduce portion control.  No individualized diet plans are provided.  Students are taught about the dangers of fad diets and learn how to be smart consumers when exposed to the media.

How was the curriculum developed?

Program was based on other science-based programs for 10-14 year olds.  Current research and accepted medical practice are taken into account. Principles of health education, child development, and behavioral theory were all used to develop a small-group, interactive, fun program including games, weekly prize incentives and a grand prize to encourage the completion of weekly homework assignments.
