Having a baby is one of the most wonderful times but with the excitement comes a lot of questions. Rochester General Hospital is dedicated to providing classes to help you prepare for this important time in your life. The information in this brochure can help you decide which classes will best suit your needs.
We have also included class series recommendations that might be of interest. A reduced rate applies if all classes in a series are scheduled at the same time. Rochester General Hospital childbirth educators can also assist you with additional educational needs that are not listed. These needs might include classes for an older childs attendance at the birth, an expectant mother on bed rest or parents adopting a newborn. PRENATAL CLASSES
Early Pregnancy - A Great Start (Weeks 6-20)
This class is for expectant parents during those very important first months of pregnancy. The class will cover topics such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, your changing body and discomforts of pregnancy and physical conditioning exercises that can help you cope with the changes. You will also learn about the growth and development your baby is experiencing at this very formative time.

Breastfeeding Class (Weeks 25-32)
Studies have shown that breastfeeding provides babies with the best nutrition. This class is strongly suggested for those families that are interested in learning about breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed. A Certified Lactation Consultant will provide you with information to help you prepare for a successful and happy experience. Husband or significant other is encouraged to attend.

Third Trimester Childbirth Classes (Late Pregnancy) (Weeks 28-34)
To meet the needs of the woman/couple who never attended childbirth classes this 5 session program will help prepare you for the birth of your baby. Course content and discussions will cover labor and delivery, cesarean delivery care, medication and anesthesia, postpartum care, parenting skills, exercise, breathing, relaxation, pain management and birth plans. There will also be films on labor and birth, breastfeeding and newborns as well as a tour of the TWIG Birthing center. Please note: Class size is limited. Vaginal Birth Refresher Course (Weeks 32-36)
This two session course is for the woman who has had a previous vaginal birth. It is recommended that this class be taken later in pregnancy. This refresher course will review breathing and relaxation techniques as well as pain management options. A tour of the TWIG Birthing Center is also included.

Birthing Center Tour (Weeks 25-32)
Expectant mothers and their birth partners are encouraged to attend a free one half hour tour of the TWIG Birthing Center. This tour is designed to help expectant parents become familiar with the Birthing Center. In addition to the tour an in-depth discussion of what to expect during your admission, delivery, hospital stay and discharge will be held. Please note: You must register for this class. If you are taking a prenatal Class at RGH your tour will be conducted during your class session. If you are attending class at the Greece or Eastview location you must register for this session.

BABY CARE & SAFETY CLASSES
Baby Care Class
Taking care of a newborn baby through their ninth month is the focus of this 1 session class. All aspects of daily care including feeding, bathing, clothing, and other important skills are covered. Expected stages of infant development during the first year will be discussed. Please note: This class would be helpful for adoptive parents of newborns.

Infant CPR & Safety Class
Help your child's first year to be a safe one by taking this very important course. Taught by a certified Basic Life Support instructor this class gives parents CPR skills and safety information for children up to one year old. Topics covered include choking, rescue breathing, CPR, SIDS and safety tips to prevent accidents at home.

Infant/Child Passenger Safety
Taught by a certified car seat examiner this class includes discussions regarding safe car seats and other issues concerning child safety (including gates and walkers.) There will also be a demonstration and discussion on accurate car seat placement and safely securing your child into the seat.

ADJUSTING TO THE NEW BABY CLASSES
Sibling Class (Suggested for ages 3-12 years old)
A new baby in the house is an exciting time for everyone. This class is for the big brother and/or sister to help them prepare for the new arrival. Siblings will make a new gift for the baby or a focal point for mom to use during labor. Participants will also be taught how to help mom prepare for the big day by helping her pack her suitcase. A discussion of feelings and how to help when the new baby comes home round out this session.

Grandparenting 101
Grandmothers and grandfathers are encouraged to attend this class designed to help you enjoy your new grandchild and support the new parents. A number of topics will be discussed including recent changes in obstetrical care, the emotional aspects of grand parenting, long distance relationships and grandparents as care givers. This is a great class for new grandparents.

Please register at least two to three months in advance for the best choice in classes as they do fill up quickly and class size may be limited.
There may be a cancellation fee. For Classes held at Rochester General Hospital, please park in the ramp garage. Your parking fee is included in the class price unless otherwise noted.

REFUND POLICY
First time parents registering for Track 1 special registration - no refunds will be given except under special circumstances, since this program is already discounted 20%. For other classes, no refunds will be given for cancellation within 7 days of the class.
