General Description

Staffed by Rochester’s only board-certified colon and rectal surgeons, this section of surgery specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the intestines and the rectum.

Conditions that we treat include:

• Colon and rectal cancer
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Rectal prolapse
• Lower gastrointestinal (GI) problems
• Fecal incontinence
• Colorectal polyps (Familial adenomatous polyposis)
• Diverticulitis
• Complex anal fistulae and other anal problems

Leading-Edge Diagnostics and Treatments

We use the most modern tests and procedures to diagnose gastrointestinal problems, including:

• Interventional endoscopy
• Rectal ultrasound
• Electrographic studies
• Manometric studies

Our surgeons use laparoscopic and robotic procedures whenever possible. Unique therapeutic approaches available for conditions of the colon and rectum include:

• J-pouch procedure (Park's Procedure)
• Sphincter-saving surgery
• Pouch procedures
• Ano-rectal reconstruction for fistula or fecal incontinence
• da Vinci robotic colorectal surgery

The Division of Colorectal Surgery at Rochester General Hospital also coordinates the area’s only J-Pouch Support Group for people in need of the ileoanal J-pouch procedure (Park’s Procedure).
