Today, more and more people struggle with weight gain - some to a point where it becomes life threatening. If you're significantly overweight and have tried to lose weight with a healthy diet and exercise without success, bariatric surgery (often called "weight loss surgery") may be an option for you.
According to a National Institute of Health (NIH), Bariatric surgery is usually a treatment for men who are at least 100 pounds overweight and women who are at least 80 pounds overweight. Bariatric surgery is sometimes an option for people who are less overweight but have diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea.
Find out if you're a candidate for bariatric surgery.
Common Bariatric Surgery Procedures
Bariatric surgery can work in one of two ways, depending upon the procedure: it can limit the amount of food a patient can consume or it can change the way food is digested. Common bariatric surgeries include:
- Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap Band) Surgery
- Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
- Gastric Sleeve
