Pulmonary & Critical Care
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit provides comprehensive consultative services for inpatients and outpatients with acute and chronic diseases of the lung and for patients treated in the Intensive Care Unit. Specific technical expertise is offered by members of the unit in the form of:
- Bronchoscopy with lung biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage
- Thoracentesis
- Insertion of central venous catheters
- Management of mechanical ventilation
- Pleural biopsy
- Inpatient and outpatient pulmonary function testing
- Percutaneous lymph node aspiration.
The Mary Stuart Mulligan Rehabilitation Program for patients with symptomatic COPD, and the Progressive Pulmonary Care Unit, an inpatient facility for patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation, are two programs unique in the Rochester area which are supervised by physicians from the Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit. The four specialists comprising the unit have done clinical research and published articles about the evaluation of the dyspneic patient, care of the symptomatic patient with obstructive lung disease, evaluation of interstitial lung disease, and the ethical issues and clinical outcomes related to the use of mechanical ventilation.
