Pharmacy

The General Apothecary is an outpatient pharmacy located on the ground floor of the Hospital near the Emergency Department. It provides a convenient place where patients at Rochester General can have initial prescriptions filled before leaving the Hospital.

Because of its non-profit status, the General Apothecary is licensed only to serve:

  • Patients who are being discharged after an inpatient stay at Rochester General. The General Apothecary can fill initial prescriptions only for these patients; refills must be obtained elsewhere (usually a neighborhood pharmacy near the patient's home)
  • Patients who are leaving the Hospital after receiving outpatient care (e.g., in the Emergency Department, Cancer Center, Outpatient Department, Pediatric Care Center, Family Health Center, The Women's Center, or Dental Clinic)
  • Patients who are leaving private physicians' offices in the General Hospital Medical Building or Parnall Building. One-time prescriptions for pain medication or antibiotics only can be filled for these patients
  • Employees and volunteers of Rochester General Hospital or its affiliates in the Rochester General Health System

The General Apothecary will prepare compounds in suspension for pediatric patients. The pharmacy also stocks some over-the-counter medications as well as diabetes test kits and other items found at a neighborhood pharmacy.
