Stroke Center
The care our patients receive is our number one priority. That's why Rochester General Hospital is proud to be among the hospitals that the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines® Program recently recognized for our excellence in improving quality of patient care and outcomes.
The Stroke Center provides a multidisciplinary approach to the care of patients who have had a Stroke or a Transient Ischemic Attack. The Center includes an 11-bed Stroke Care Unit where care is provided by neurologists, a nurse practitioner, registered nurses, social worker, unit technicians, secretaries, nutritionist, physical, occupational and speech therapists with expertise in stroke care.
The goals of the Stroke Center include maximizing the patient’s functional abilities, preventing complications, and decreasing the individual’s risk of having another stroke.
Rochester General Hospital has been designed by the state of New York as an official Stroke Center as of June 2005. Only 22-hospitals statewide have received this designation to date. According to the State Department of Health, the goal of a stroke center is to identify patients, perform diagnostic tests and start treatment within the first hour of the patient's visit to the emergency department.
The Stroke Center is also certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a Primary Stroke Center.
