Th
e Neurology Department at Rochester General Hospital, through a collaboration with the University of Rochester, provides inpatient and outpatient consultation services for patients with disorders of the brain, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and neuromuscular apparatus. The major thrust is in adult care. Cerebrovascular disease and headache are special interests. Rochester General Hospital is a Primary Stroke Center designated by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and similar certification has also been received from the New York State Department of Health.
The service provides general neurologic evaluation and operates a clinical neurophysiology laboratory and a neurovascular laboratory. The neurovascular laboratory has:
- Two duplex ultrasound devices for carotid examination
- An ocular plethysmography machine
- Two transcranial doppler machines to provide intracranial vascular procedures

The laboratory is certified in extracranial and intracranial cerebrovascular disease by the Intersocietal Commision on Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories. The clinical neurophysiology laboratory provides:
- Electroencephalography (seizure evaluation)
- Electronystagmography (vertigo)
- Evoked potential recordings including somatosensory, visual and brainstem auditory potentials (multiple sclerosis)
- Intraoperative electrophysiologic monitoring
Electromyography and nerve conduction velocities are performed by a separate sub-unit of the clinical neurophysiology laboratory as well as several affiliated private offices.
Neuorology Faculty
Rochester General Hospital and the University of Rochester Department of Neurology collaborate to provide neurological services at Rochester General Hospital. Faculty of the department of neurology provide inpatient and expanding outpatient services, adding to those currently being provided by the community private neurology practices. Members of the Faculty Practice are fully integrated with the University of Rochester Department of Neurology, sharing the academic, educational and clinical missions.
