Where Are They Now: Hospitals of Monroe and Wayne Counties
"Where Are They Now" is a photo essay of past hospitals in Rochester, Monroe County and Wayne County, New York. This is not meant to be a definitive history of healthcare but more of a reminder of institutions gone and forgotten. In the past 160 years, hospitals have changed from small cottage hospitals, to specialized institutions, to general hospitals, to today’s multi-hospital corporations. Names have changed and institutions have moved to locations little related to their former homes. Municipal Street has little connection to the hospital that was once located near it. Or North Park Plaza, which is related to the ill-fated North Park Hospital that only existed on paper.
In rural areas doctors would set up cottage hospitals in their homes or in an adjacent house. This allowed the doctors some control over their patients and an environment conducive to healing. An example was Dr. Myers Hospital in Sodus, New York. Following Dr. Myers’ death the community took it over as a community hospital.
