Pursuing excellence through nursing research

Our commitment to nursing excellence extends to our Department of Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice. We strive for the highest levels in nursing research, defined as a:

• Search for and validation of knowledge about issues important to the nursing profession (Polit & Hungler, 1999)
• Systematic, objective process of analyzing phenomena of importance to nursing (Nieswiadomy, 2002) 
• Diligent, systematic process that validates and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly influences nursing practice (Burns & Grove, 2001)

Nursing research is not medical research or clinical trials on drugs. It is not about trial and error, common sense, proving a hypothesis or cause, or “truths” or “beliefs” based on custom. Rather, our nurses diligently pursue nursing research in nursing education, nursing administration, nurses’ roles and characteristics. We are concerned with clinical problems and with the unique functions and processes of nursing. We study interventions that nurses perform or see performed, and we focus on understanding human needs, and providing evidence-based health care. Nursing research can be basic or applied, explanatory or exploratory. We use quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed methods to test theories.
