'Be a Match' Bone Marrow Drive at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital

Be part of something special - You could save a life!

Newark-Wayne Community Hospital/DeMay Living Center is sponsoring a "Be a Match" Bone Marrow Registry Drive on Thursday, February 25th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Hospital Cafeteria. Community Members are encouraged to participate in this free drive to add donors to the national database that matches people with life-threatening diseases including leukemia, lymphoma and other diseases with suitable donors.

"Some of our Team Members wanted to sponsor a drive for people needing bone marrow transplants and other such procedures," said Tonya Taylor, Director of Community Services and Co-Leader of the Recognition/Satisfaction Action Team. "Our Mission is to help our community members. This is a perfect opportunity for us to give back by providing this life-saving service that can match very ill patients with healthy donors all across the United States."

The procedure for participating is easy. All a donor will need to do is complete a registration form and complete a swabbing procedure to provide cheek cells for tissue typing. If it is determined that a donor is a match for a patient in the National Registry’s database, they will be notified by the "Be the Match" organization and the process for donation will be explained. There is no cost to the donor for participating in the "Be the Match" program although cash, check or credit card donations to off-set the cost of processing samples and providing donor services are welcome.
