The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Rochester General Hospital has been named First Runner-Up for this year’s Medical Laboratory of the Year 2009 Award, sponsored by Medical Laboratory Observer (MLO), a national monthly publication for laboratory professionals. Announcement of the award coincides with National Medical Laboratory Professional Week (April 19-25 2009).

“This is a tremendous honor for which we are very proud. The collaborative efforts of the Rochester General Laboratory and its many partners are producing real-time benefits for the patients and physicians we serve,” said Theodor K. Mayer, MD, PhD, who is Chief of the Rochester General Health System Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. “Our success is based on a structured approach to Teamwork. I am extremely proud of our excellent staff.”

Laboratories across the nation were rated on 8 categories by the publication’s three judge panel, including customer service; productivity, efficiency, quality control, creativity, contribution to patient care, innovation and lab inspection scores. In naming the Rochester General Laboratory as First Runner-up, the Medical Laboratory Observer noted, “Rochester General’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a shining example of what laboratory professionals can do when they join together for various “causes.” Not only does RGH’s legacy rest with its 75-year old tradition of educating medical laboratory students but also with its modern, savvy attitude of teamwork for a patient-centered future.”

This year, the Rochester General Health System’s School of Medical Technology is celebrating its 75th anniversary. It is the second longest running program in the nation. To date, 665 MT students have graduated from the program.

The laboratory at Rochester General Hospital is staffed 24-hours a day, 7-days a week throughout the year.
