Rochester General Hospital Enacts Temporary Restriction on Visitors to OB/GYN Unit, Pediatrics Unit
(10/26/09)
Rochester General Hospital has implemented a temporary restriction that prohibits visitors under the age of 18, as well as those who are ill, from the third floor of the hospital, which houses the Twig Birthing Center and OB/GYN services. The same restriction applies to visitors of the Pediatrics Unit. The restriction was put in place to protect potentially vulnerable patients and infants from the spread of the H1N1 virus, which is rapidly increasing in the Rochester area, most prevalently among the younger population.
There has been a significant increase in influenza cases in the past three days, most of which have been in children and adolescents who have been seen in physician offices or treated and released from our Pediatric ED. As H1N1 is a community-wide issue, and particularly prevalent among younger people, we feel strongly that the restrictions will help us better ensure the health and safety of our most vulnerable patient population – as well as our staff who serve them. We will continue to monitor the situation - in collaboration with officials from other Rochester area hospitals - and will re-evaluate visitor policies on an ongoing basis.
