B. Thomas Golisano Pavilion and Emergency Department Opening October 7th
(8/24/09)

The construction of the new B.Thomas Golisano Pavilion and Emergency Center will enable Rochester General Hospital to continue to offer high quality services that meet the growing needs of our community for decades to come. After nearly two years of construction, the B. Thomas Golisano Pavilion and Emergency Center will officially open on Wednesday, October 7th.
Highlights of the New B. Thomas Golisano Pavilion and Emergency Center
The B. Thomas Golisano Pavilion and Emergency Center is a major component of Rochester General Hospital's $55 million Master Facility Plan. It includes expansion and renovation of Rochester General Hospital's Emergency Department, as well as enhancements to our world-class Rochester Heart Institute. Upon final completion of all phases of the project, the Golisano Pavilion will provide:
- An Emergency Department almost twice the size of the existing ED, with discrete areas to efficiently accomodate changing patient populations. The number of treatment bays will increase from 65 to 87
- A dedicated 12-bay pediatric ED that includes a separate waiting area for pediatric patients and their families
- A 64-channel CT Scanner (already installed) nearby to provide patients and staff with efficient access and enhanced diagnostic imaging
- A digital radiology room within the new ED to enhance diagnostic services and reduce wait times
- A designated, discrete, Crisis Intervention Unit for patients in need of psychiatric care
- A 21-bed Clinical Decision Unit to treat and observe patients who may require hospitalization
This exciting project positions our Emergency Department, the existing version of which was designated to accomodate 50,000 visits annually but which is now caring for more than 80,000 visits each year, to serve our patients in the best way possible and to accomodate future estimated volumes of nearly 100,000 patients annually.
Rochester Heart Institute to Also Benefit
The Rochester Heart Institute at RGH, already nationally recognized for excellence, and designated eight times as a Thompson-Reuters Top 100 cardiac hospital, also benefits from the project. Enhancements to the Rochester Heart Institute include:
- The Cardiac Catherization and Electrophysiology suite relocated and expanded on the second floor of the Pavilion
- A new 12-bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), with private and larger rooms, will be located next to the Catheterization Labs and connected to the main hospital operating rooms
- A direct, dedicated elevator will be installed between the ED and the Cardiac Catheterization area to allow even faster intervention for patients with heart attack symptoms as well as improved access to inpatient areas on the 4th and 5th floors
Funding for the B. Thomas Golisano Pavilion and Emergency Center includes a $9 million gift from Mr. Golisano made in March 2005, the largest single gift from a living donor Rochester General Hospital has ever received. Gifts of one million dollars or more were made by six other donors.
