Rochester General Appoints John Valvo MD Medical Director of Robotics

Rochester General Hospital has announced the appointment of John Valvo, MD, as Medical Director of Robotics. Dr. Valvo, an attending physician and Division Head of Urology at Rochester General, will be responsible for providing support and direction to facilitate growth in Robotic Surgery at RGH.

In addition to providing overall direction for the Robotics program, Dr. Valvo will assist in the training and orientation of RGH surgeons to robotic technology; represent Rochester General Health System to non-RGH surgeons in the community who may be candidates to being utilizing robotic surgery; organize seminars and other education events associated with robotics for surgeons in Western New York; and assist in the development and oversight of hospital and medical staff quality monitoring and credentialing programs associated with robotics.

Earlier this year, Rochester General Hospital became the first hospital in Upstate New York to implement the da Vinci S HD Surgical System, the worldメs first robotic surgical system with 3D, HD vision This system gives surgeons twice the effective viewing resolution for improved clarity and detail of tissue and critical anatomy and enables them to offer patients minimally invasive procedures ヨ available to treat conditions as diverse as prostate cancer and hysterectomies ヨ that result in less pain, discomfort, blood loss and a quicker return to normal activities.

The da Vinci S HD Surgical System is the second da Vinci system at RGH- the first da Vinci Surgical System was installed in 2004. Since then, more than 1,000 prostate-related surgeries have been performed using the da Vinci System, along with almost 300 GYN procedures. The addition of the second da Vinci at Rochester General Hospital will help reduce surgical wait times while also providing many patient benefits.

Dr. Valvo, who maintains practices in Rochester and Greece, earned his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed an internship in General Surgery and Residency in Urology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
