Geriatrics

Residents who want to gain experience in geriatrics beyond that provided to all housestaff in the program can elect the geriatrics concentration. In this pathway, residents will spend one of their two weekly outpatient continuity clinic half-days caring for frail elderly persons attending the Independent Living for Seniors PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly) site. This site has achieved national prominence as an innovative, managed care model. Residents work closely with experienced geriatricians and members of a multidisciplinary geriatrics team. If you choose to do so, you can spend additional 4-week blocks of time each year in this setting for more in-depth experience.

This pathway will qualify residents with a specialized understanding of geriatrics syndromes and nonspecific presentations of illness seen in the elderly. Residents will also develop a comfort level working in a managed care environment that will prepare them for this aspect of practice in all settings. Should housestaff in the geriatrics concentration wish to pursue even more specialized training in this area, the geriatrics program also offers a one-year clinical fellowship in geriatrics.
