Pulmonary Critical Care
The Pulmonary Medicine Unit at Rochester General Hospital is comprised of four full-time faculty active in patient care, teaching and research. The Unit typically evaluates 15-20 new inpatients and 8-10 new outpatients each week.
Medical residents are asked to evaluate a minimum of five to eight patients per week. There are daily conferences for review of pulmonary function tests, weekly Pathology conference, weekly Chest Conference and weekly Radiology conference. By the end of the rotation, the medical resident should be able to interpret pulmonary function tests, understand the proper indications for fiberoptic bronchoscopy and the proper use of specialized radiology for diagnosis of respiratory disease. The resident will improve his or her skills in managing common lung disorders, such as bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, pneumonia and lung masses, in addition to seeing patients with a wide range of less common forms of pulmonary disease.
