Evidence Based Medicine

Faculty at Rochester General Hospital are committed to the practice of Evidence-based Medicine (EBM). During your training at RGHIMRP, you will be instructed in the formulation of clinical questions, searching the medical literature for the best evidence, and the critical appraisal of the literature.  

Morning Report, the primary upper level resident teaching conference is designed around case presentations that lead to focused clinical questions.  Residents focus on issues of diagnosis, prognosis and therapy during Morning Report, and use education prescriptions to fill knowledge deficits. For residents interested in pursing the more advance aspects of EBM, an elective is offered in which participants develop the course content based on interest and educational need.  In recent years, residents have improved their appraisal skills in the areas of decision analysis, practice guidelines, economic analysis, and disease probability (See below).   R1's are introduced to Evidence based medicine in R1 report, and have the fundamentals demonstrated and reinforced in the R1 Skills block,  EBM practiced daily on the medical floors and in the intensive care unit. Clinical questions are evaluated and answered by the patient care teams, and faculty facilitate the residents in their search for the best available answer.

1. The overall learning goal of this rotation is for each learner to improve a great deal in the practice of evidence-based medicine. The activities will be a combination of individual study, small group learning methods, one on one tutorials, and specialized experiences or “clinics” pertaining to a specific task. Each learner will improve upon:
2. His/her ability to formulate a good, concise, searchable question from a patient case based on the learner’s need for information.
3. His/her ability to efficiently search the existing literature for the best available evidence.
4. His/her ability to critically appraise the evidence they find.
5. His/her ability to apply the results of their appraisal to the patient question at hand and to their clinical practice.
6. His/her ability to evaluate their own clinical performance.

The learners will be evaluated on their improvement in the areas of self-assessment,  critical thinking, searching, and critical appraisal over the course of the elective.
