Dental Residency

General Practice Residency

Rochester General Hospital is a 528 bed teaching hospital with a wide range of inpatient, outpatient and clinical teaching facilities. RGH is accredited by The Joint Commission, and has been recognized as one of the top 100 Heart Hospitals in the United States eight times.  RGH is a major teaching hospital of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and is an affiliate of the Cleveland Clinic.

Hospital-based experience is provided in ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings for five general practice residents during a twelve month program. The educational components of the dental residency program include clinical dental services, off-service rotations and didactic courses. Approximately 70% of the residents' time is devoted to clinical dental services and 30% to rotations.  An optional second year program is also available.

The general practice residency program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation for both its one and two year programs.  Information on CODA accreditation is available at: http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/accred/commission/index.asp

Residents successfully completing the program fulfill the experience requirement for obtaining initial licensure in New York State.

Goals and Objectives

  • The goals of the General Practice Residency are to provide advanced training in general dentistry and applied basic sciences with specific objectives as follows.
  • To act as patients’ primary care provider.  This includes providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care
  • To enhance residents’ technical and diagnostic skills in general dentistry by means of seminars in the various dental disciplines and by direct patient care
  • To enable the residents to correlate medical sciences with the practice of dentistry through off-service rotations on appropriate medical services and by means of seminars and teaching rounds
  • To educate the residents in hospital protocol, hospital organization and the practice of dentistry in a hospital setting
  • To allow the residents to interact with other health care disciplines in the provision of comprehensive care to patients including cardiology, oncology, renal dialysis and the regional hemophilia center
  • To gain experience in the treatment and management of special patients such as the elderly and developmentally disabled by direct patient care and through appropriate seminars
  • To direct the residents toward academic pursuits in general dentistry and to develop the necessary skills through literature review sessions, involvement in the preparation and delivery of seminars and encouraging and providing research experience
  • To understand the oral health needs of the community and participate in community service

These goals are evaluated during the year at quarterly evaluation sessions and through an outcomes assessment process.
