Dental Residency
General Practice Residency

Hospital-based experience is provided in ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings for five general practice residents during a twelve month program. The educational components of the dental residency program include clinical dental services, off-service rotations and didactic courses. Approximately 70% of the residents' time is devoted to clinical dental services and 30% to rotations. An optional second year program is also available.

Goals and Objectives
- The goals of the General Practice Residency are to provide advanced training in general dentistry and applied basic sciences with specific objectives as follows.
- To act as patients’ primary care provider. This includes providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care
- To enhance residents’ technical and diagnostic skills in general dentistry by means of seminars in the various dental disciplines and by direct patient care
- To enable the residents to correlate medical sciences with the practice of dentistry through off-service rotations on appropriate medical services and by means of seminars and teaching rounds
- To educate the residents in hospital protocol, hospital organization and the practice of dentistry in a hospital setting
- To allow the residents to interact with other health care disciplines in the provision of comprehensive care to patients including cardiology, oncology, renal dialysis and the regional hemophilia center
- To gain experience in the treatment and management of special patients such as the elderly and developmentally disabled by direct patient care and through appropriate seminars
- To direct the residents toward academic pursuits in general dentistry and to develop the necessary skills through literature review sessions, involvement in the preparation and delivery of seminars and encouraging and providing research experience
- To understand the oral health needs of the community and participate in community service
These goals are evaluated during the year at quarterly evaluation sessions and through an outcomes assessment process.
Clinical Patient Care Activities
Clinical Dental Services
Residents are typically scheduled from 8:15 AM-12:00 PM and 1:00 PM-4:30 PM for direct patient care. Patient care is scheduled throughout the year at the
Residents provide comprehensive care to geriatric, developmentally disabled, and medically complex patients. Residents also rotate through the hospital’s Ob/Gyn clinic to provide dental screenings and education for expectant mothers.
On-Call
Residents perform emergency service duties (first call) after hours in consultation with Emergency Department staff.
Inpatient Care
Residents assigned to inpatient care are responsible to obtain and/or review histories, manage and follow-up patients admitted to the dental services. Residents also participate in delivery of dental care in the operating room. A rotation schedule is designed to assure that each resident receives experience in the care and management of hospitalized patients.
Off-Service Rotations
Anesthesia
Residents are assigned to the RGH Department of Anesthesiology on a part-time basis totaling two to four weeks. Residents participate in the administration of general anesthesia and moderate sedation to inpatients and ambulatory surgery patients under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist.
Physical Diagnosis
The hospital’s Department of Medicine provides a didactic and clinical course that allows residents to gain competence in obtaining medical histories and performing physical evaluations.
Radiology
An elective assignment to the Department of Radiology is available to familiarize residents with various imaging techniques and their interpretation.
Emergency Medicine
Residents rotate for with attending physicians in the Emergency Department to observe and participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients with medical emergencies. Training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support is also provided.
Hematology/Clinical Laboratories
A comprehensive assignment furthers residents’ understanding of clinical laboratory procedures. A correlated lecture series is also provided.

Didactic Program
Over 250 hours of scheduled lectures, seminars and courses are provided in various dental and medical subjects. Courses are also provided in specialty areas such as pediatric dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics, and oral & maxillofacial surgery. - Treatment of Special Dental Patients
- Control of Pain & Anxiety in Dental Practice (IV moderate sedation and nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia)
- Practice Management & Quality Assurance
- Osseointegrated Implants: surgical and prosthetic aspects
The resident staff are encouraged but not required to conduct research. Guidance and assistance are provided to engage in research as resources and time allow.
Salary and Benefits
The stipend for first-year residents in the class of 2009-10 is $46,978. The stipend and benefits for subsequent years is determined in advance of the start of the program. Other benefits include:

Application
Application may be made through ADEA’s Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS). Details on application requirements and deadlines are updated annually on the PASS website https://portal.passweb.org/. Residents must be eligible to obtain a New York State Limited Permit to practice within in the residency program.
RGH is a member of the Associated General Dentistry Training Programs of Rochester, which coordinates the application and interview process for the three local post-graduate general dentistry education programs.
The residency class of 2010-11 will begin on July 1, 2010, preceded by a required orientation program beginning in late June.
