Choosing A PDA

ViaHealth PDA Information
November 2006
When choosing a PDA which will be synched with a RGHS PC, or running a RGHS application, please consider the following:
- The current RGHS PDA standard is the Dell Axim (Pocket PC, Windows Mobile based). It is planned that the Dell line of PDA’s will also be the future standard, and they are fully supported by ViaHealth Information Services and Technology. In addition, the Dell line is compatible with ViaHealth’s future wireless network.
- RGHS applications are evaluated and certified by ViaHealth primarily for PocketPC based PDAs. This is due to the operating system on a Palm PDA not being a windows operating system, and therefore may not be natively compatible. This can cause a Palm based PDA to go from functional to not functional after an upgrade, patch, etc.
- RGHS recommended Palm based PDA’s currently have limited support, and there are some issues that will prevent them from future support. The main issue is the lack of a Palm based PDA that can support the minimum security standards for wireless networking (802.1x). Palm PDAs will not meet minimum security requirements to access the ViaHealth wireless infrastructure.
- Only Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) has the ability to sync with MData (MercuryMD) from the desktop synching cradle at the users’ desktop.
- MData, one of our new applications from Mercury MD enables MD’s to load their patient data onto their PDA’s by currently syncing at a synch station and will only function with MercuryMD approved devices. This list is available via the MercuryMD website: http://www.mercurymd.com/en/SupportServices/SupportCenter/CertifiedDevices/.
- Please note a currently popular Palm model, the Palm T 5, is not supported and has known issues functioning with the MData application. This is an important point when considering purchasing a non-supported (vendor and/or RGHS) PDA. In the case of the Palm T 5, we can not guarantee support from RGHS or MercuryMD.
