Point Of Care

Point of Care Testing (or Decentralized Laboratory Testing) is any laboratory test performed outside the central clinical laboratory. As such, this testing is under the direction and responsibility of the Chief of the Clinical Laboratories.

Point of Care Testing may include waived testing (such as whole blood glucose meter, stool for occult blood, or urine dipstick testing), Provider Performed Microscopy Procedures (PPMP), or moderately complex laboratory tests performed in selected locations within Rochester General Health System.

Locations that perform Point of Care Testing may include Emergency Services, patient care units within the hospital, physician offices/clinics, or school-based health centers owned by RGHS.

Point Of Care Testing team members are available to assist any sites performing these tests Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm by calling (585) 922-4255. Gretchen Smith, Senior Medical Technologist, may also be reached via e-mail at gretchen.smith@rochestergeneral.org.

All requests to institute Point Of Care Testing or to add an additional test must be made in writing to the Chief of the Clinical Laboratories.
