About the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
The Rochester General Hospital Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is a service-oriented laboratory that maintains a superior record for rapid turnaround of diagnostic results. We offer comprehensive services in Surgical Pathology, Cytology and Autopsy Pathology. These services are provided by a dedicated team of fourteen (14) experienced pathologists, eight (8) of whom have subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology, working together with PAs, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists and other office and laboratory support staff.
The Rochester General Hospital Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine areas of expertise include:
- Gynecologic pathology & cytology (Pap tests)
- Breast pathology, including fine needle aspiration (FNA)
- Non-gynecologic cytology
- Dermatopathology & oral pathology
- Head, neck and pulmonary pathology
- Hematopathology
- Neonatal and pediatric pathology
Rochester General Hospital is one of the largest pathology departments and cytology laboratories in upstate New York. In 2008, the laboratory processed and diagnosed:
- 120,379 cytology specimens
- 45,996 surgical specimens
- 62 hospital-based autopsies
We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies, including the SurePath™ liquid based Pap test system, flow cytometry and the Ventana™ Bench Mark System for immunohistochemistry. The laboratory is accredited by the CAP, NY State Dept. of Health, JCAHO and the AABB. Several of our department faculty are pursuing clinical research, and all are involved in resident and medical student education.
