Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Earns National Recognition in Elderly Care
February 24, 2014
Newark-Wayne Community Hospital is one of 28 hospitals in the United States to be honored with the “Exemplar” designation by NICHE (Nurses Improving care for Healthsystem Elders), a national nurse-driven organization that promotes quality of care for older adult patients in the hospital/healthcare setting. The Exemplary designation is the highest of four designations offered by NICHE. There are only two other hospitals in New York State to have achieved this honor and no other hospitals in the Finger Lakes Region. Newark-Wayne and the other Exemplar Hospitals will be honored at the national conference in San Diego this spring. They have also been acknowledged on the NICHE website and will be receiving a certificate.
At Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, the NICHE program was spearheaded by Deborah Stamps, EdD, MS, RN, GNP, NE, BC, Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer and is co-coordinated by Merilou Vanhoute, BSN, RN, Clinician III, Care Manager and Heather Hart, BSN, RN, Clinician III, Administrative Clinical Leader.
“With an aging population, we felt that this group had specific needs that we wanted to respond to,” said Deb Stamps, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. “I am so pleased with how our team members have whole-heartedly embraced this initiative. It is a testament to the entire team’s commitment to our patients’ satisfaction,” she added.
NICHE Exemplar Hospitals demonstrate organizational commitment to the quality care of older adults. The organization’s requirements include: implementation of the NICHE Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) model and evidence-based protocols on all units that care for older adults; implementation of systemic aging-sensitive policies; inclusion of the input of patient, families, and community-based providers in planning and implementation of NICHE initiatives; and assuming regional and national leadership roles.

It is just one of the recommendations that the hospital enacted to provide a better hospital experience especially for patients over 65, the average age of more than 50 percent of Newark-Wayne’s hospitalized patients.
