Participants of “Friends for the Day” Adult Day Care at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and residents of DeMay Living Center wanted to do something to help others in the community during this season of giving. The two DeMay Living Center programs decided to come together and purchase new toys for children whose families receive help from the Victim’s Resource Center of the Finger Lakes.
To accomplish this, the “Friends for the Day” participants donated pennies from their “penny fund” and the DeMay residents earned funds through a holiday sale and basket raffle of items made by the residents with assistance by Therapeutic Recreation Team members. In all, the residents and participants purchased more than 100 toys to donate the Victim's Resource Center. In addition, East Palmyra Christian School, which regularly provides musical programs for the participants and residents throughout the year, donated coloring books to go along with the programs’ donations.
“Children provide joy to the residents and participants in these programs throughout the year,” said Ronette Coston, from the Therapeutic Recreation Team. “The seniors were very happy to be able to “give back” through this project,” she added.
