High school and college students from Wayne County and surrounding communities have the opportunity to volunteer at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital or DeMay Living Center. Within the structure of a focused, three-week volunteer internship, students do worthwhile work that truly makes a difference in the overall care of people from the local area and do so in a variety of roles and capacities. The opportunity to gain work-related experience, build a resume, and explore the healthcare field is invaluable.

What are the Requirements?
- Student must have completed 8th grade, be at least 14 years of age, and be attending either high school or undergraduate college
- Minimum 82% (“B”) numeric grade with supporting documentation from your school guidance counselor
- Application, including a brief essay explaining why you would like to volunteer at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital or DeMay Living Center
- Signed Applicant and Parental/Guardian Consent Agreement & Contract
- Two School References (from Guidance Counselor, Teachers, Coaches, etc.)
- Health screening, including immunization records and current PPD
When do Summer Student Volunteer Interns volunteer?
One three-week Summer Student Volunteer Internship will be offered from
July 23 – August 10, 2012 (Application deadline of June 1st)
Students volunteer 4 hours a day (from 8am-noon -or- noon-4pm -or- 4pm-8pm) Monday-Friday for a total of 60 hours over the three weeks.
What services do Summer Student Volunteer Interns Perform?
- Assisting with patient care duties and nursing unit responsibilities
- Greeting/Escorting roles
- Food Service and menu delivery
- Clerical and office assistant roles/tasks
- Patient discharge and transport assistance
- Visiting with patients
- And more!
Application Process
Step 1: Apply for the Summer Student Volunteer Internship Program
Apply to be a Summer Student Volunteer Intern by the posted deadline by completing and returning an application, which includes:
- A completed application form.
- The "Documentation of Numeric Grade Level" form filled out by your School Counselor.
- A brief "Essay of Intent" explaining why you would like to volunteer with Newark-Wayne Community Hospital or DeMay Living Center
- The signed “Applicant and Parental/Guardian Consent Agreement & Contract”
- Two completed "Letter of Reference" forms by school employees (Guidance/Career/School Counselor, Teachers, Coaches, etc.)
Application for Summer Student Volunteer Internship
Step 2: Interview
An interview is scheduled with you once your application is complete (including all items described above) and received by the Volunteer Office. (Note: An interview does not guarantee placement in the program.)
Step 3: Health Review and Screening
If you are accepted into the Summer Student Volunteer Internship Program, you will be required to have a Health Review and Screening that includes documentation of immunization records and two (2) tuberculosis skin tests.
Step 4: Criminal Background & Reference Check
All employees, staff and volunteers in the Rochester General Health System who are16 years of age and older are required to have a criminal background and reference check.
Step 5: Mandatory General Orientation and Training Session
The week before the Monday start-date of your scheduled summer session, you will be required to attend a mandatory, general orientation and training session to prepare you for your time as a volunteer at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital / DeMay Living Center.
Step 6: Picture for ID Badge and Volunteer Uniform
At your general orientation and training session, the Thursday before the Monday start-date of your scheduled summer session, you will have your photo taken for your ID badge and will receive your volunteer uniform.

Mandatory General Orientation Session
Participation in entire Volunteer General Orientation & Training session is required,
on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, from 1- 4pm
