How Does a Telehealth Appointment Work?

An appointment with a physician using telehealth technology works the same way as a typical in-person office visit. Here's what you can expect during your telehealth appointment:

healthcare provider with patient using telehealth technologyOn the day of your appointment, you check into the Office of Telehealth at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital (or one of our other telehealth sites as directed). You will be taken to an exam room equipped with the telehealth, interactive video equipment.

One of our registered nurses or a physician assistant will take your medical history and your vitals and will remain in the exam room to assist both you and the doctor during your appointment.

Instead of walking in door, the doctor uses an interactive video conferencing system or the Telehealth robot to meet with you in the exam room. Instantly, you are able to be see and hear the doctor and he/she is able to see and hear you.

As with an in-person appointment, the doctor often starts by asking for more of your medical history, and then asking you about your specific symptoms or your condition.

At the end of the appointment, the doctor may provide treatment recommendations, request a follow-up visit, order lab work, or refer you to another specialist, just like an in-person office visit.

The telehealth physician may also send copies of their notes to your primary care physician. This allows the primary care physician to stay involved in your care.
