Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehabilitation is an exercise and education program designed to assist people in lowering their risk factors in people who have recently experienced a heart attack, angioplasty, bypass surgery, or who have been repeatedly diagnosed with stable angina. These individuals are usually eligible to have their health insurance assist in paying for a monitored program. An EKG rhythm is viewed by a registered nurse, and blood pressure and heart rates are also recorded.
Once a person has graduated from the monitored program, they can continue to attend on a self-pay basis. Vital signs are recorded, and a nurse is present to assist with any questions or needs which may arise.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation program is located in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Suite on the first floor of the hospital and has designated parking conveniently located on the north side of the hospital. Hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and Tuesday & Thursday, 7:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Physical Therapy
You will be referred for physical therapy following a number of conditions, such as sports injury, arthritis, stroke, amputation, neck or back injuries, muscle strains, developmental disabilities, chronic pain and even mobility limitations due to aging. Highly-trained therapists will explain the proper ways to use crutches, canes and walkers, as well as how to lift, carry or push heavy objects using proper body mechanics. Work conditioning and work handling programs are an integral part of returning to work.
Respiratory Care
Newark-Wayne Community Hospital offers specialized pulmonary care for both children and adults. We provide consultation, assessments, follow-ups, education and co-management of many breathing disorder cases. A pulmonary function lab is available to outpatients for complete pulmonary diagnostic services.
Occupational Therapy
We assist you in developing the skills required to accomplish personal needs as well as participating in the workplace and community. Skill development may be as basic as bathing, dressing and eating or as skilled as the operation of an electronic wheelchair. Whether the disability is a result of an injury, a developmental defect, aging, stroke or a disease such as multiple sclerosis, our occupational therapists are professionally trained to help you keep strength, eye-hand coordination or independence in home or vocational activities. A certified hand therapist is also available for rehabilitation of the hand, wrist, elbow and customized splinting.
Speech-Language Pathology
This service provides therapy to both adults and children with speech and language impairments. This therapy may be beneficial if you or a family member experience problems like the inability to use or understand words, progressive nerve disorders such as Parkinson's disease, voice problems, cerebral palsy, cancer or stuttering. Our speech pathologists also can play a significant role in video fluoroscopy used for identifying swallowing disorders.
