Evermore so I have been given a family with YAP. I can count on this family to help support me through these coming years at the University of Rochester. “The Youth Apprenticeship Program has opened my eyes to many aspects of the medical field that I would have otherwise been oblivious to including material management environmental services, and many other “behind the scenes” positions that are crucial to the hospital’s success. The program and the personal experience I have gained from it have revealed to me, the undiscovered love I have for helping people and aiding in the advancement of the human race. I have also gained many personal relationships with wonderful people who have showed and taught not only about health care and patient care but about life, the work force, and being responsible and independent young adult. And because of the Youth Apprenticeship Program, I have decided to pursue a career in women’s care and a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Rochester.”

I am very thankful for all the support and wonderful people who made the Youth Apprenticeship Program such a memorable experience for me.”

“The Youth apprenticeship program allowed me to work in the dental clinic and has given me the assurance that this is my true career passion. I am most grateful for YAP because many college freshmen don’t know what they want to do or want to be and waist years in college trying to figure it out and this program has already helped me figure it out. I am currently registered at Monroe Community College for this fall. My goal is to take courses to get accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program, so one day I can become a hygienist and work right in the dental clinic at Rochester General Hospital.”

“The Youth Apprenticeship Program is a program that’s been known through its foundation for success in the past and continues to grow and will become a greater program for the future. Within the past year being apart of the program has been a splendid experience. This program allowed me to take part in different departments narrowing down my career choices and helping me chose to pursue a medical career. That’s probably the biggest strong point and why the program has been so successful. Now as a graduate from the program I’m going off to college with a focus in Dentistry. YapperZ! – It’s been a Blast.”

“I am forever indebted for the foundation that the Youth Apprenticeship Program has provided me. The program has supplied me with an experience of a lifetime, a knowledge base unavailable to most and relationships that shaped have helped shaped both my job ethic and manner. I would also like to express a most heartfelt thank you to my mentor and job coach, Ms. Naomi Dailey. Through Naomi’s interaction with not only the patients, providers and staff, but with me, I have experienced a level of compassion that I'm now honored to bestow to others.”

“Before the youth apprenticeship program I was a shy kid who didn’t like to do much. I kept to myself and I didn't have much confidence in my abilities. I joined this program afraid and unsure if it was meant for me. After my first rotation I told a mentor of mine that I wasn't sure if this job was right for me. He asked why, and I told him because I was such a shy person I didn’t like all the interaction I was receiving from people in the hospital. He laughed and told me that he believed in me and that "most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine." He also said "that fear was a normal thing" and that if I wanted to grow as a man it would be a factor that I would have to face in everyday life. I thank him because when I look at who I am today, the change is evident. Through multiple rotations I was able to figure out my likes and dislikes, my strengths and weaknesses, and my fascination with dentistry. I have grown as a young man and I have this program to thank for it, and will apply all the skills eloped into pursuing a career as a Dentist.”
