About the Program
The School of Medical Technology at Rochester General Hospital is a competitive program which has enjoyed a long history of providing excellent graduates who may be found working in all parts of the United States and around the world. Several outstanding features contribute to the Program’s excellence:
Rochester General Hospital
The Hospital is a 528-bed, university-affiliated, acute care teaching hospital. A tremendous variety of medical specialties is represented. The Hospital is home to a large cancer center as well as one of the largest cardiac care/cardiac surgery programs in the State of New York (www.rochestergeneral.org).
Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital
The Program holds one clinical affiliate, the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) which is composed of the Laboratories at the University of Rochester and Highland Hospital. URMC is one of the largest and most specialized hospitals within the western New York region and hosts a robust environment and history of collaboration, innovation, education, and community (www.urmc.rochester.edu).
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and URMC Laboratories
The Laboratories at both RGH and URMC are modern, convenient facilities equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and robotics interfaced with dedicated laboratory information systems. Both Departments are spacious with several hundred technical team members providing support for both inpatients and outpatients, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Laboratory Workload
Both Laboratories perform several million analyses per year. The students have a chance to see and analyze not only completely normal specimens, but highly unusual and abnormal clinical material as well.
Excellence of Faculty
The graduate-level lecture series is delivered by the M.D./Ph.D. Division Heads and Pathologists within the Department as well as technical specialists. These professionals teach at the University of Rochester School of Medicine as well as in other graduate programs around the Rochester area. The students learn a tremendous amount of clinical information during the lecture series.
Instructional Model
The clinical practicum is taught on either a one- technologist to one-student basis or in a small group setting with one or more instructors, using actual clinical material. Each laboratory division has work stations, equipment, and space devoted to student use to eliminate crowding and competition for materials and equipment.
Library Facilities
The Werner Medical Library facility at Rochester General is a full-service, comprehensive medical library which offers outstanding support (See the RGHS home page). Our students use the Werner Medical Library extensively. The Edward G. Miner Library at URMC is a full service medical library supporting the School of Medicine and Dentistry as well as all patrons within the Medical Center. (www.urmc.rochester.edu).
School of Medical Technology Classroom
The Classroom facility, used for the 10 week Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science, the lecture series and small group practicum thereafter, is a well equipped, comfortable, spacious classroom devoted entirely to education of the students. It is used exclusively for the School of Medical Technology and has been completely renovated to allow clinical space for 24 student positions.
