Cardiology

The physicians of Rochester Cardiopulmonary Group maintain a busy private cardiology practice.  Based in offices in the Parnall Building and the General Hospital Medical Building adjoining Rochester General Hospital and in several satellite locations, the group provides a full range of services in clinical cardiology, including inpatient and outpatient consultation and follow up, stress testing, echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiologic testing and pacemaker therapy.  Rochester Cardiopulmonary Group is pleased to offer to residents the opportunity to sample the full menu of the group’s clinical activities.

One RCPG physician (the primary attending) will be “responsible” for the resident’s cardiology experience during each (approximately) four-week block.  When possible, the primary attending’s period of preceptorship will coincide precisely with the resident’s rotation.  In this capacity, the attending will serve a mentoring role, guiding residents to utilize most effectively all of the available learning tools and arenas.  These include selected inpatient and outpatient consultations, scheduled CCU attending rounds (Tuesday, Thursday), Cardiology Unit conferences, and experiences in the various diagnostic and interventional laboratories, both in the hospital and office settings.

One of the important functions of the primary attending will be to have several (generally three) didactic sessions per week, typically about an hour in length, at times that are mutually convenient for the attending and residents.  This time will be set aside to discuss topics of interest or review interesting electrocardiograms, for “debriefing” on patients seen with other physicians, for “heart murmur rounds” on inpatients, and so on - in short, for any educational experiences the small group would like to pursue. Residents will see consultations not only with their attending for the block but with other RCPG physicians, as physician schedules and the primary attending might suggest.

At the beginning of the rotation, the primary attending and residents will review a written cardiology curriculum, identifying items of special importance or interest which will help direct the selection of the block’s clinical activities.
