Leading the Way in Colorectal Care

Physician Connection

Fall 2012

For patients in need of colorectal services ranging from conventional but necessary screenings to advanced robotic surgical resections, one of the leading teams in the nation is closely affiliated with Rochester General Health System – and a short walk from the Rochester General Hospital campus.

The eight fellowship-trained subspecialists of Rochester Colon & Rectal Surgeons, led by managing partner Stephen Rauh, MD, have more than 150 years of combined experience. This privately owned practice has been affiliated with Rochester General Health System since 1976. In fact, RCRS opened a new Portland Avenue office specifically to provide easy access for RGH referring physicians and patients.

In keeping with Rochester General’s national leadership role in a wide array of robotic surgical procedures, RCRS is a well-known pioneer of minimally invasive robotic colorectal surgery for diverticulitis, rectal and colon cancer, Crohn’s disease andcolon_1 ulcerative colitis. This team of board-certified colon and rectal surgeons is the largest in the country to offer robotic surgery in this subspecialty, and RCRS is among the top 1 percent of all practices nationwide in robotic colorectal surgical volumes. Such a large and well-trained team is a particular plus, Dr. Rauh says, due to the widely varied types of colorectal surgery: “With more skilled surgeons, and as the most experienced team in robotic colectomy operations, we’re able to perform a better procedure.”

Beyond the rarity of this robotic subspecialty, RCRS is one of only a handful of centers worldwide to have been endorsed by Intuitive Surgical, makers of the DaVinci robotic platform, to teach their techniques to visiting surgeons.

On-site surgical suites featuring state-of-the-art equipment enable office anal cancer screenings, colonoscopies, and other outpatient procedures to be performed conveniently; and Saturday colonoscopy appointments further accommodate patients’ busy schedules.
