About the Department of Pathology & Laboratory
The Rochester General Hospital Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is a nationally and regionally recognized Laboratory accredited by CAP, NYS DOH, JCAHO and the AABB with a superior record for quality, customer service and rapid turnaround of diagnostic results.
The Laboratory Medicine Division offers comprehensive testing menus in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Advanced Coagulation, Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics and Transfusion Medicine, and performs 3.5 million tests annually using state-of-the-art analytical and testing equipment, including robotics; testing is performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Pathology Division includes Surgical Pathology, Cytology and Autopsy services, led by a team of fourteen experienced pathologists with subspecialty board certifications in Blood Banking, Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, Hematology, Molecular Genetic Pathology and Pediatric Pathology. The RGH Cytopathology Laboratory, one of the largest in upstate New York, includes nine subspecialty boarded Cytopathologists and performs 100,000+ cytologic evaluations annually. Areas of expertise in Surgical Pathology & Cytology include:
- Gynecologic pathology & cytology (SurePath™ liquid based Pap tests)
- Breast pathology, including fine needle aspiration
- Non-gynecologic cytology
- Dermatopathology & oral pathology
- Head, neck and pulmonary pathology
- Gastrointestinal & genitourinary pathology
- Neonatal and pediatric pathology
For both Pathology and Laboratory Medicine questions and assistance, pathologists are always available for consultations, welcome calls (585.922.4121) or emails to discuss individual patients, participate in 30+ monthly interdisciplinary conferences with colleagues from many different disciplines and actively support Oncology Services, including the Lipson Cancer Center and RGH Breast Care Center of Excellence. The Department serves providers and their patients throughout the community, including a partnership with the RGHS Ambulatory Care Affiliate which supports nearly 30 collection stations in Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Livingston and Wayne Counties and cares for 350,000+ outpatients each year.
In all, 400+ dedicated and highly skilled individuals – PA’s, Technologists, Technicians, Phlebotomists and other support staff – work together with pathologists to provide excellent patient care through comprehensive outpatient and inpatient laboratory and pathology diagnostic services.
