Q: What are the admission requirements?
The applicant must:

  • Be 17 years of age or older with a High school diploma or equivalency
  • Attain a level of Proficient or higher on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) entrance exam
  • Satisfactorily complete college-level classes English 101 and Psychology 101 at a regionally accredited college with a C or better.
  • Provide an essay stating why the applicant is interested in becoming a nurse
  • Submit three (3) professional and current references. Reference must be from a former employer, teacher, clergy member and be within the past year.
  • Complete a BLS certification for Health Care Providers through the American Heart Association.
Q: How do I apply?
The applicant must:

  • Complete all sections of the online application
  • Pay the application fee ($50, non-refundable)
  • Complete the TEAS exam, scheduled through https://www.atitesting.com/home.aspx
  • Send OFFICIAL High School or GED certificate and college transcripts to Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing 100 Kings Highway South Rochester, NY 14617
  • Be interviewed by at least one faculty member
Q: After I have completed the application process, what happens next?
  • The faculty admissions committee will review the application
  • A letter will be sent to inform the applicant of the admissions decision (either admission, waiting list, or denial)
  • Once accepted, you will be required to submit a non-refundable admission deposit and a signed admission form to hold your place in the class
  • Make an appointment with the financial aid advisor all requirements have been satisfied
Q: How long is the program and what are the daily hours?
  • The program is a clock hour program requiring 1200 clock hours. Classes run from either August to June or from January to November, Monday through Friday and typically start at 8am and finish at 3:30 pm. Clinical days start at 7:30am.
Q: What facilities are used for clinical experiences?
  • Clinicals are scheduled within the Rochester General Health System by the faculty. In the first semester, clinicals are done in a long term care facility such as Hill Haven or at DeMay. The second semester is reserved for acute care settings mainly at Rochester General Hospital. In the third semester, clinicals are done as observations combined with acute care clinical days.
Q: I read something about an Advanced Placement option. Do I qualify?
  • We do have an Advanced Placement option for those that qualify. Please make an appointment with an advisor.
Q: Someone told me that LPN's are no longer needed in the healthcare field. Is this true?
  • This is a common misconception because LPN's are not utilized in the acute care setting as frequently as they once were. There are many settings in which the LPN can and do work. This question was answered in an article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle on June 22,2014. Reporter Robin L. Flanigan reported: "Job opportunities for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in the Finger Lakes region are expected to grow by 9.4% between 2010 and 2020, with 150 annual openings, according to the New York Department of Labor."
Q: How do graduates of the program request their IGH transcript?
  • Please fill out the following form and send a $5.00 check or money order per transcript to: Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing, 100 Kings Highway South, Rochester, NY 14617. DO NOT SEND CASH. Requests are only processed when received in writing and mailed the school address above). Transcripts will not be issued until all financial obligations to the school have been cleared. Please allow 3-5 business days for processing.
