Classes to help prepare you for pregnancy, childbirth and baby care

Before you have a baby, you are likely to have a lot of questions. Rochester General Hospital (RGH) childbirth classes can help prepare you for this joyous time in your life. Our certified childbirth educators help you choose the class or classes that are right for you, as well as assist with additional educational needs. Group tracks are also available to help you take advantange of multiple related classes in an economical package, while you prepare for the full childbirth experience.

RGH Childbirth Classes

Early Pregnancy - A Great Start
(Weeks 6 -18)

For: Expectant parents during those very important first months of pregnancy.

Topics include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, your changing body and discomforts of pregnancy and physical conditioning exercises that can help you cope with the changes. You will also learn about the growth and development your baby is experiencing at this very formative time.

Number of classes: 1
Cost: $25 per couple

 

Third Trimester Childbirth
(Weeks 28-34)

For: Women / families who have not yet attended childbirth classes.

An overview of labor and delivery, Cesarean delivery care, postpartum care, exercise, breathing, relaxation, pain management and birth plans. Includes a tour of the TWIG Birthing Center.

Number of classes: 5
Cost: $85 (your health insurance may cover a portion of the cost)

 

Breastfeeding
(Weeks 30 - 37)

For: Strongly suggested for families interested in learning more about breastfeeding.

Studies have shown that breastfeeding provides babies with the best nutrition. Current education will be provided to help you prepare for a successful experience. A support person is encouraged to attend.

Vaginal Birth Refresher
(Weeks 32-36)

For: Women with previous deliveries.

This refresher course reviews breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as pain management options and the emotional transition of an expanding family. Includes a tour of the TWIG Birthing Center.

Caring For Multiples

(Weeks 6 - 18)

For: Families expecting multiples.

Topics include third-trimester pregnancy concerns, options for delivery, the late preterm infant, safety issues and parenting tips for multiples. Include a tour of the TWIG Birthing Center.

Cost: $40 per couple

C-Section
(Weeks 34 - 38)

For: Expectant families who have a planned first-time Cesarean section.

Discussions include admission and anesthesia procedures and postpartum recovery care. Includes a tour of the postpartum surgical unit.

Birthing Center Tour 
(Weeks 25 - 32)

For: Expectant mothers and their families.

This 30-minute tour of the TWIG Birthing Center include an in-depth discussion of what to expect during your admission, delivery, hospital stay and discharge.

Cost: FREE of charge (Registration is required. Parking costs not included)

Sibling Class

For: Big brothers and sisters (ages 3-10) to help them prepare for the new arrival.

Siblings will make a new gift for the baby or a focal point for mom to use during labor, learn how to help prepare for the big day (by packing mom's suitcase), and discuss feelings and ways to help once the baby comes home. Includes a tour of the TWIG Birthing Center.

Baby Care Class

For: All adoptive parents and all expectant parents.

This class covers all aspects of caring for a newborn infant, including normal newborn characteristics, daily care, current pediatric safety standards and growth and development.

Infant CPR and Safety

For: All expecting or new parents and infant care providers.

Help your child's first year to be a safe one by taking this very important course. A certified Basic Life Support instructor  gives parents CPR skills and information on choking, SIDS and tips for preventing accidents at home.

Cost: $15 per person / $25 per couple

 

Grandparenting 101

For: Grandmothers and grandfathers.

This class is designed to help you enjoy your new grandchild and support the new parents. Discussion topics include recent changes in obstetrical and newborn care, the emotional aspects of grandparenting, long-distance relationships and grandparents as caregivers. Also includes a tour of the TWIG Birthing Center.

Enrolling in a track of multiple related classes is an economical way to help you prepare for the full childbirth experience.

Discounts

All classes are free to RGHS Women's Center patients. RGH employees receive a 25% discount on regular fees (no additional discounts on track pricing).

Refunds

No refunds may be given for cancellation within seven days of class, except under special circumstances.

Parking

You may park in the hospital's Portland Avenue ramp garage. Your parking fee is included in the class price unless otherwise noted.
