Abdullah Almahayri, MD

Dr. Al-Mahayri, a staff surgeon at Rochester General Hospital, was previously in practice in Ripley, WV and Jefferson, NC. He was also a preceptor of medical students at Marshall University and at West Virginia University, both in West Virginia. Dr. Al-Mahayri earned his medical degree at Damascus University Medical College in Damascus, Syria and was a chief surgical resident in Bridgeport, Connecticut and at Prince George General Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland.

Angel N. Boev, MD

Dr. Angel Boev is a member of the Maxwell-Boev Clinic and provides comprehensive neurosurgical care at Rochester General Hospital.

Dr. Boev earned his MD degree at Mercer University School of Medicine. During his residency training at the University of Rochester, he had a special focus in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery and the management of tumors of the brain and spine. Dr. Boev also received extensive training in endoscopic surgery of the pituitary gland. Dr. Boev is a member of several professional organizations (including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons) and has numerous publications and national and international presentations on topics including the treatment of spine disorders, brain tumors and intracranial hemorrhage.

Christopher B Caldwell, MD

Dr. Caldwell is from Vermont and attended Bowdoin College, where he received a B.S. in chemistry and biology. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Dr. Caldwell completed his surgical residency at the University of Rochester. He later completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Following his training, Dr. Caldwell returned to Rochester and joined the practice in 1990.

Dr. Caldwell is a frequent presenter to patient and community organizations. Dr. Caldwell has co-authored research papers, and contributed to chapters in medical texts related to his specialty areas.

Mark Steven Davenport, MD

Mark S. Davenport received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Subsequently, he completed a general surgical residency and a plastic surgical fellowship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Davenport is board certified in general surgery and plastic surgery, and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Davenport has been performing plastic and hand surgery in Rochester since 1992.

Bastian Domajnko, MD

Dr. Domajnko is highly regarded throughout the Greater Rochester area for his extensive surgical expertise in management of diseases of the colon and rectum.   He practices with a team of surgeons who are national leaders in robotic colon and rectal surgery.  He is skilled in numerous surgical procedures, particularly in minimally invasive surgery.  Areas of expertise include surgical management of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, and cancers of the colon and rectum.  

Dr. Domajnko received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Tufts University in 1998, graduating with cum laude honors.  In 2002 he graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA.  From 2002 to 2007 he completed a surgical residency at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital located in Rochester, NY.  Following surgical residency, Dr. Domajnko went on to specialize in colorectal surgery by completing a fellowship at Cook County Hospital/University of Illinois at Chicago in 2008. 

He is board-certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery and General Surgery, and maintains an assistant faculty position at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Research projects include laparoscopic and robotic colon and rectal surgery.  Community activities include involvement in public education programs such as a J-Pouch support group for ulcerative colitis patients and diverticulitis seminars.

Dr. Domajnko is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Stephen Ettinghausen is the Director of Surgical Oncology at Rochester General Hospital and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. He received a BA from Amherst College and an MD from Weill Cornell Medical College. After completing two years of residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and one year of residency in anatomic pathology at the New York hospital-Cornell Medical Center, he finished residency in General Surgery at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He completed fellowships in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute at NIH and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has been involved with medical student and surgical resident education throughout his career.

Dr. Ettinghausen is a member of a number of specialty surgical societies. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Beginning in 2011 representing the New York chapter of the ACS, he became a member of the Board of Governors of the ACS. This year he joined the ACS Committee on Medical Student Education as the Board of Governors representative.

Dr. Ettinghausen specializes in the care of patients with cancers of the liver/bile ducts, pancreas, upper and lower gastrointestinal tract; abdominal, pelvic and extremity sarcomas; melanoma. He performs surgery including the following; adrenalectomy, resection of colon & rectal cancers including recurrent rectal cancer, pelvic exenteration, low anterior resection, abdominal colectomy, esophagectomy, gastrectomy, hepatic (liver) surgery benign & malignant, large and small bowel surgeries, axillary (armpit) and groin lymph node dissections, GI stromal tumor resections, melanoma resections, upper/lower GI-tract carcinoid, pancreatic resection, Whipple procedure and distal pancreatectomy.

Asim Farid, MD

Dr. Asim Farid is a native of Pakistan, where he went to medical school.  After graduation in 1984 he went to England for surgical training, and obtained a Fellowship in General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He then moved to the USA in 1991, where he underwent Residency training at the Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, PA.  After completing this training in 1996, he moved to Kentucky where he was a General Surgeon and Chief of Surgery at Owen County Memorial Hospital.  In 2000 he joined Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Michigan, for a 1 year Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery.  In September 2001 he moved to Rochester where he is now settled.

He is skilled at performing numerous surgical procedures in colon and rectal surgery. He has a particular interest in laparoscopic procedures, surgery for cancer of the colon and rectum and robotic surgery.  He was one of the first surgeons in the area who performed the Stapled hemorrhoidopexy procedure, a specialized procedure for certain types of symptomatic hemorrhoids.

Dr. Farid certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Jeffrey Allan Fink, MD

Director, Hand Surgery Center

Jeffrey A. Fink graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Rochester, a plastic surgery residency at Yale University, and an orthopedic hand fellowship at Brown University. Dr. Fink is board certified in hand surgery and plastic surgery and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Fink specializes in surgery of the hand and upper extremities. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and is Director of the Rochester Hand Center.

Dr. Ralph Madeb earned his medical degree from Université de Paris in Paris, France, and completed his residency in urology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Madeb is board certified in urology by the American Board of Urology and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Madeb is Medical Director for the Finger Lakes Urology Institute, as well as Medical Director for the Office of Telehealth at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Telehealth uses audio, video and Internet technology to bring real-time health care services from specialists across the Rochester General Health System to patients in rural or underserved areas throughout the Greater Rochester, NY, area. Dr. Madeb has been published in more than 40 journal articles on his extensive training, research and expertise in treating urologic cancers and conditions. Dr. Maxwell has been a member of the Medical and Dental Staff at Rochester General Hospital since 1981, and serves at the Division Head of Neurological Surgery at RGH. Dr. Maxwell is also a member of the Maxwell-Boev Clinic.

He earned his Medical Degree from Columbia University and completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital and a Fellowship at the Neurological Institute of New York (where he served as Chief Resident) and The National Hospital Queens Square.

Joy Katherine Knopf Michaelides, MD

Steven John Ognibene, MD

Dr. Ognibene graduated Summa Cum Laude from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in 1995. In 1999 he graduated from medical school at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.

He completed his general surgical residency at the University of Rochester / Strong Memorial Hospital in 2004. Following surgical residency Dr. Ognibene completed a fellowship in the specialty of colorectal surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, CA in 2005.

Dr. Steven Ognibene exhibits extensive surgical expertise in the management of diseases of the colon and rectum.   He practices with a team of surgeons who are national leaders in robotic colon and rectal surgery.  He performs numerous surgical procedures on the small and large intestine (colon), rectum and anus.

Areas of specific interest include surgical management of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, colorectal cancer and anorectal disorders.

Dr. Pennino, also a member of the Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Medical Doctorate from Georgetown University Medical School. Dr. Pennino completed a Plastic Surgery residency and Hand fellowship at the University of New Mexico, a General Surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and an Aesthetic fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital in New York City. Stephen M Rauh, MD

Chief of Colorectal Surgery

Dr. Rauh grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended college and medical school. In 1982 he began his career in Rochester, where his wife and then small children could be near her family. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Rochester, and trained in Colon & Rectal Surgery at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Rauh joined Rochester Colon & Rectal Surgeons, P.C. (RCRS) in 1988.  The Rauhs live in Webster.

Dr. Rauh was the first in upstate New York to adopt many technologies such as laparoscopic colon surgery (1993) and robotic colorectal surgery (2008). Both such groundbreaking technologies in colon and rectal sugery took place at Rochester General Hospital.  He leads the largest team of fully board certified colon specialists in Rochester.  His practice, RCRS, has provided more varied and numerous robotic colon surgeries than any group in the state of New York and probably the country.

His interests include Transanal Surgery, Crohn's and ulcerative colitis care, streamlining perioperative care for shorter hospital stays, restoring bowel control (fecal incontinence) diverticulitis treatments (including nonsurgical) and treating colorectal cancer without colostomies.

Christopher Jessie Richardson, DO

Dr. Christopher J. Richardson is a surgeon at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, New York, where he has been in practice since April of 2006. Andrew Smith, MD, FACS earned his Bachelor of Arts from Hamilton College and his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Vic Vernenkar earned his medical degree at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, NY.  He subsequently completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the Deborah Heart and Lung Center affiliated with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He is New York State licensed, Board Certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery and is a Certified ATLS instructor.

Dr. Vernenkar practices all aspects of general surgery including: thyroid, breast surgery, laparoscopic procedures, (hernia, gall-bladder, bowel resection). Dr. Vernenkar’s goal is to help patients have the most positive and informative experience as possible.  He is committed to a team focus on patient safety with positive outcomes in a compassionate manner.

When Dr. Vernenkar is not teaching or seeing patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons and dog, a yellow lab.  He enjoys movies, history, mysteries and ethnic food.

Brian Patrick Watkins, MD

Dr. Watkins is originally from Washington State and attended Seattle University where he received a B.S. in General Science. He then attended the Medical College of Wisconsin where he earned both a master’s degree in anatomy as well as his medical degree. Dr Watkins completed his surgical residency at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After residency, Dr. Watkins was an attending physician at a Mayo Clinic hospital in Wisconsin. He moved to Rochester in 2006, and became an attending surgeon at Rochester General Hospital.

Andrew Michael Wensel, MD

Dr. Andrew M. Wensel has joined the University of Rochester Medical Center and serves as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery to provide comprehensive neurosurgical care at Rochester General Hospital.

As a native of Rochester, Dr. Wensel returned after earning his MD in Cleveland at Case Western Reserve University. During his residency he selected a focus in skull base surgery, complex spine, and deep brain stimulation. Dr. Wensel is board-eligible in the United States. He is a member of several professional organizations (including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons) and is published on topics including treatment of aneurysms, as well as neurocritical care of intracerebral hemorrhage and stroke.

Dr. Wensel specializes in spine surgery, functional neurosurgery and surgical pain management.
