Treatment for Colon & rectal and Anal Cancer
If you have been diagnosed with colon & rectal or anal cancer, it's important to understand there's hope. If cancer is detected in its early stage, 80% to 90% of people have restoration to normal health following treatment. Your unique treatment will depend on factors such as your general health, the site of your tumor and the stage the cancer has reached, which we will determine based on the following questions:

1)   How extensive was the growth of the tumor?

2)   Has the tumor spread through the colon wall?

3)   Were any lymph nodes near the tumor involved?

4)   Has the cancer spread to other parts of the body (i.e., the liver)?

In almost all cases of colon & rectal cancer, surgery is required to remove the portion of the colon that contains the tumor, as well as any nearby tissue. We may also recommend radiation and chemotherapy, or a combination of both, in addition to surgery.

Most anal cancers, however, can be treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation alone. We often reserve surgery for advanced cancers or anal cancers that have not responded to chemo and radiation therapy.

If your condition requires surgery, our team uses the most advanced laparoscopic (minimally invasive) and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgical techniques to treat you whenever possible. Robotic surgery allows us to perform precise, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in a manner never before experienced to improve your healing and promote well-being.

Robotic Colon & Rectal Surgery

Rochester General Hospital is the first hospital in Upstate New York to implement the da Vinci Surgical System—the world’s first robotic surgical system with 3D HD vision—bringing our surgeons to the forefront of this rapidly evolving option for colon & rrectal surgical care and offering patients the most advanced surgical procedures for the best possible outcomes.

This state-of-the-art robotic surgical equipment provides detailed views of the affected tissue at twice the regular resolution, through just a few small incisions, allowing our surgeons to perform complex colon and rectal operations with greater precision and control than ever before.

Robotic colon & rectal surgery also offers our patients significant advantages over traditional “open” surgeries, including:

  • Reduced pain and trauma to the body
  • Less blood loss and need for transfusions
  • Less postoperative pain and discomfort
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
