Meet Our Pediatricians

Julia Stein, MD

“For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a pediatrician. I love to watch my patients and their families grow together, to help them make good healthcare choices, to empower them to learn about themselves and take charge of their health.”

Dr. Julia Stein Dr. Julia Stein, who knew as a teenager she wanted to be a pediatrician, has been with the Rochester General Medical Group since 1995. She moved to Rochester after completing her residency in pediatrics at Overlook Hospital (Columbia University affiliate) in Summit, New Jersey, and has a special interest in growth and development, mental health, holistic health, environmental health and adolescent female issues.

A graduate of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Medical School of Pediatrics in Russia, Dr. Stein is board certified in pediatrics and Integrative Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Holistic Medical Association. She takes as active role in teaching medical students and pediatric residents as a clinical instructor of Pediatrics with the University of Rochester. Dr. Stein also chairs the Integrative Medicine committee of the Monroe County Medical Society, and volunteers for a number of local organizations involved with students’ health education. She frequently contributes to parenting magazines and lectures in the community on matters related to Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Stein is married, has two children and considers herself a lifelong learner and educator. She enjoys music, movies, reading, traveling and yoga.

Sarah I. Marques, MD, MSPH

“Caring is about listening. I take time to listen to children, to engage them. I make them feel that they are heard.  I don’t rush the visit.”

Dr. Sarah MarquesDr. Sarah Marques has pediatrics in her DNA. The daughter of a pediatrician, she says, "My role model is my Dad. He always has time for both kids and parents, and looks at aspects of children's health beyond the medical."  Diet, environment, schooling, family dynamics--Dr. Marques is well-versed in a wide range of children's health issues. As the mother of two children, she combines her firsthand knowledge of parenting with special interests in adolescent medicine, early childhood development, and autism. With her ability to understand kids, listen to parents, and translate it all into the best of care, she is respected by her peers and beloved by her patients.

A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Marques has been with the Rochester General Medical Group since 2005. She graduated from the College of William & Mary summa cum laude and from UNC Chapel Hill Medical School of Public Health. She completed her residency training in pediatrics and an additional fellowship year in adolescent medicine at the University of Rochester.

Carolyn Jacobs, MD, MPH

Dr. Jacobs received her undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Biology from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Jacobs always had a passion for teaching and making people smile.  Instead of pursuing a career in stand-up comedy she followed her first dream. Since she was a young girl she was determined to be a doctor. Very cliché, but dreams do come true...

Dr. Jacobs earned her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse.  She completed her residency in pediatrics at Albany Medical Center followed by a fellowship in adolescent medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center. While training during fellowship she also earned her Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Rochester.

Upon completion of her fellowship Dr. Jacobs joined the pediatric group at Rochester General Hospital.  She enjoys working with children and young adults of all ages.  She has had the pleasure of working with very diverse populations during her career including refugees, LGBTQ youth, urban and suburban youth along with deaf and hard of hearing young adults. Dr. Jacobs has learned from every group with whom she has had pleasure to interact.

Dr. Jacobs worked at Rochester General Pediatric Associates for seven years then went to Rochester Institute of Technology to work in the student health center as a staff physician. She was at RIT for just under three years and is very excited to return to Rochester Regional Health. The alliance between the two organizations allows her the opportunity to combine her love of general pediatrics and adolescent health, specifically college health.

Her professional interests include mental health, reproductive health, college health and preventive care.

Dr. Jacobs is also involved with the Rochester community as an advocate for both women and youth. She serves on the board of directors for the YWCA and is involved with the newly established Black Physicians Network of Greater Rochester. Dr. Jacobs is also involved with her faith-based community.

Dr. Andrew ShermanAndrew Sherman, MD

Dr. Sherman earned his Medical Doctorate from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He completed a subsequent academic general pediatric fellowship at URMC while concurrently earning his Masters in Public Health. Dr. Sherman is board certified in general pediatrics.

A multi-year assignment with the Peace Corp in Senegal, West Africa following his undergraduate education inspired Dr. Sherman to both pursue a career in pediatric medicine and to devote a considerable portion of his time and energy to the promotion of evidence-based malaria prevention in rural West Africa.

Dr. Sherman joined Bay Creek Pediatric Group in July 2014. He and his wife reside in Brighton where they are busy raising two young sons.
