Breast Cancer & Breast Conditions According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in American women. Women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer more than any other type of cancer with the exception of skin cancer. However, the good news is that the number of new cases of breast cancer has decreased from 1999 to 2006, and deaths from breast cancer have decreased every year. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small. Doctors recommend that women have regular breast exams and mammograms to detect breast cancer early. Treatment is most effective when breast cancer is detected early. Other Breast Conditions Although many women fear cancer, most breast problems are not cancerous. Some of the more common breast conditions include: Mastalgia (Breast Pain) Breast Lumps Fibrocystic Breast Disease Nipple Problems and discharge (abnormal) Breast Infections and inflammations Make An Appointment with the Rochester Breast Center You can request an online appointment with the faculty breast practice (non-urgent).
