Robert M. Lerner, MD, PhD, FACR
Dr. Lerner is an authority in the field of ultrasound. Following an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, Dr. Lerner completed a Master Degree in electrical engineering at the University of Michigan. He then spent five years as a research engineer in the physics department of General Motors Research Labs before returning to academia to complete the dual degree of MD and PhD at the University of Rochester. His PhD in electrical engineering research involved new engineering concepts to improve the capability of ultrasound for diagnosis and treatment of a variety of medical conditions. He then translated that clinically by completing medical school, internship, and a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Rochester. He then joined the faculty and became Associate Professor of Radiology and Head of Ultrasound for 9 years prior to affiliating with Rochester General Hospital and joining Rochester Radiology in 1989. He is one of the founding members of the Rochester Center for Biomedical Ultrasound at the University of Rochester. An accomplished author, Dr. Lerner has been the section chief of ultrasound at Rochester Radiology for years, expanding the clinical use of ultrasound, training and teaching countless residents, and the ultrasound technicians. He was involved in writing some of the early standards for the American College of Radiology and is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR). He is also an expert in minimally invasive ultrasound-guided procedures, including prostate biopsies and thyroid biopsies. Dr. Lerner is still pushing the boundaries of the field of sonography with his latest research on sonoelasticity, utilizing the way certain lesions compress on ultrasound to better help diagnose them noninvasively for the purpose of characterizing tissue with potential to decrease the need for biopsies.
