About Children & Youth Treatment Services

mom, teen and doctorThe Behavioral Health Network’s Children and Youth Services Treatment Team provides treatment for children with significant emotional problems and their families. Our services include crisis intervention, psychiatric / mental health evaluation, and ongoing treatment, which may include individual therapy, group & family therapy, and medication support services.

Our Services

Evaluation / Screening

Children are evaluated by a primary therapist or psychologist at the initial visit to determine whether ongoing care is needed and to determine a treatment plan. A comprehensive evaluation looks at both psychiatric, emotional, social and medical issues of the child and allows the psychiatrist or nurse practitioner to arrive at conclusions about methods of care.

Individual Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is offered by the primary therapist and involves the patient working with the therapist on identified problem areas. With young children the individual therapy may take the form of play therapy.

Group Therapy

A patient is referred for group therapy by his/her primary therapist. The weekly groups provide education, support, problem solving, learning social skills, anger management and personal growth. Dialectical behavior therapy groups for adolescents are offered at Genesee Mental Health Center.

Crisis Intervention

Patients are seen on an urgent basis by a Children & Youth Services staff member during the hours of operation if they are experiencing symptoms that are causing significant or urgent distress.

Medication Services

This service is provided to patients who have been admitted to the Children & Youth program and are assessed by an MD or Nurse Practitioner as needing to be treated with medications. If medication is indicated, it is prescribed and monitored by the psychiatrist or Nurse Practitioner.

Family Therapy

Family therapy is indicated when the identified concern requires the joint efforts of both the family and the patient to achieve a positive outcome.

School-based Health Care Program

We provide school-based health care programs in several schools in the Rochester City School District.  We offer pediatric care in addition to mental health services, including sick and well-child care, done in collaboration with the child's pediatrician. Our school-based health centers are located at:

  • John Marshall High School on Ridgeway Ave.
  • John James Audubon School #33 on Webster Ave.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King School #9 on N. Clinton Ave.
